About

My Inspiration

My name is Jo and my love for Ethiopia and Jewellery comes from my Mother. Being my Mother's homeland, she has shown me the beauty and wonder of one of the oldest civilisations in the world. Ethiopia is so much more than the famine and poverty that people so often associate with the country. It's a place of rich history, magnificant landscapes and the most gracious and hospitable people you will ever meet. Call me biased, but I truly think that everyone should have a little piece of Ethiopia in their life, and I hope to bring this to you with my jewellery.

The name Shifara Jewellery comes from the Shifara Tree (Moringa stenopetala), a tree found extensively throughout Ethiopia. It is known for having many uses as the leaves - which are known to be highly nutritious - can be boiled and eaten, and the oil is thought to have medicinal properties. The story goes, that my grandmother

was known as the medicine woman on the road that she lived on as she would heal people with the oil from this tree.
